| The manager of 100 street sweepers in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, has taken the money and coats given to them by billionaire philanthropist Chen Guangbiao last week, Yangtze Evening News reports. Chen gave Wu Xiuying 1,000 yuan on Nov. 29 for her 59th birthday and 500 yuan each to 49 of her coworkers, as well as down puffer coats for all of them. Now their manager has reportedly taken the gifts, saying her employees had attended the "donation ceremony" on behalf of all her 100 employees. The manager says she will divide the money equally among all employees at the end of the year and give the coats to an "excellent worker of the year." |

| Kim Jong-un, the heir to succeed Kim Jong-il, vowed to "feed the people with rice and meat soup within 3 years," adopting the slogan of regime founder Kim Il-sung, his grandfather, Yomiuri Shimbun reports. Kim Jong-un rehearsed the slogan at a meeting in Pyongyang early November. "We should restore the people's economy to the level of the 1960 to 1970s within three years to reach living standards whereby people can enjoy rice and meat soup and live in tile-roofed houses and wear silk clothes," a source quoted him as saying. Since he was established as the heir in September, Kim Jong-un has stressed improvement of people's lives. "In the past, it was fine if we didn't have food as long as we had bullets. But now we must have food, but not necessarily bullets," he has been quoted as saying. |

The decision puts GWU at the forefront of the movement toward gender-neutral housing policies at many of the nation's top schools. But where most have limited coed rooms to some upper-class housing, GWU is opening the option to all students, including incoming freshmen. The policy also signals the rising clout of gay, lesbian and transgendered students, who successfully argued that assigning students by gender was inherently unfair when many of them might be more comfortable with a roommate of the opposite sex. |

| A Japanese probe sent on a two-year mission to Venus failed to enter orbit and may have flown passed the planet, BBC reports. The probe, called Akatsuki, which means dawn, appears to have not fired its engines enough to inject it into the proper orbit. Japan's space agency, called JAXA, said it still had communication with the probe. |
