Climate talks end with modest steps

The proposed deal does not include a commitment to extend Kyoto beyond 2012, when it is due to expire, but it would prevent a collapse of climate change negotiations. |
The governments participating in the climate talks in Cancun agreed on Saturday to modest actions to combat climate change and to provide greater financial support to poor countries, but they avoided tough decisions on cutting greenhouse gas emissions, Reuters reports. |
The deal features a Green Climate Fund that would provide US$100 billion a year in aid to poor nations by 2020. In addition, the agreement contains measures to protect tropical forests and ways to share clean energy technology. Nearly 200 countries also set a target to limit a rise in the average world temperature to below 2 degrees Celsius over pre-industrial periods. However, there was no major progress on how to extend the Kyoto Protocol, which obliges almost 40 wealthy nations to cut greenhouse gas emissions. |
After two weeks of discussions, the primary success in Cancun was simply preventing the collapse of climate-change negotiations, along with garnering support for a shift to low-carbon economies, and rebuilding trust between rich and poor countries on the challenges of global warming. |
