| The list of China's top 500 private companies was revealed yesterday, with Jiangsu Shagang Group at the top for the second straight year, China Business News reported. Suning Appliance was second and Legend Holdings Ltd. came in third. The standard to be included in China's top 500 private companies increased to 3.66 billion yuan from 2.97 billion yuan in 2008. Compared with central state-owned enterprises such as China Mobile and PetroChina, private enterprises are still small. Statistics showed that net profits of China Mobile and PetroChina together in 2009 were more than that of the top 500 companies combined. |

| Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao bluntly warned Japan that its companies operating in China should raise pay for their workers at a high-level Japan-China meeting held in Beijing on Sunday, the Wall Street Journal reported. Wen's comments followed a call by Japan's foreign minister, Katsuya Okada, for an improvement in business conditions for Japanese companies in China. A wave of labor disputes that has swept China this year have affected a number of high-profile Japanese investors, including Honda Motor Co. and Toyota Motor Corp. Wen responded by telling Japanese officials that the background to labor troubles in China is the relatively low level of pay at some foreign companies. |

| The People's Bank of China launched a "super e-banking" system Monday that will let customers access their accounts on one Website, the Beijing Times reported. Unlike the existing system, "super e-banking" can realize real-time inter-bank transfers and balance inquiries. The system can provide access to authorized non-financial payment service organizations to better satisfy public requirements for home payments. Companies like Alipay, a Chinese equivalent of Paypal, would not be shut out. During the promotional period, the system is free, while officials have not yet decided how to charge for the service. Fees are expected to fall as "super e-banking" will definitely increase banks' efficiency, according to a report. |

The pipeline, stretching 67 kilometers from Skovorodino in east Siberia to China's northeastern frontier, is an offshoot of a new oil export route Russia is building to the Pacific Ocean, providing a strategic window on the fast-growing energy markets of Asia. |

| A test which could stop women laboring for hours in the hope for a "normal" birth, only to end up with a Caesarean section, has been developed in Sweden, BBC reported. It is believed that when high levels of lactic acid are measured in the amniotic fluid, it indicates that the uterus is exhausted, and it is unlikely the mother will deliver vaginally. Measuring this acid could help decide whether to end a difficult labor and opt for a Caesarean earlier. The test is being rolled out in a number of European hospitals. |
