Yangzhou

Yangzhou, on the northern bank of the Yangtze River, has long been the inspiration for many ancient poets. Its beautiful scenery was the topic of many ancient poems. It boasts ruins from the Tang Dynasty (618 – 907) and beautiful gardens from the Qing Dynasty (1644 – 1912).

Slender West Lake, situated in the northwest suburb of Yangzhou, is the most well-known tourist destination in the city. To differentiate it from the West Lake of Hangzhou, it was named Slender West Lake due to its narrow shape.

The gardens of Yangzhou, like the famed gardens of Suzhou, are charming. In the late years of the Qing Dynasty, salt dealers from Yangzhou made a fortune from the salt trade and built many of these gardens. The Ge Garden is the most famous of these.
