London Zoo debuts brother and sister lion cubs

Two new extremely rare Asian lion cubs have made their first appearance in the UK. They were the first to be born at London zoo in a decade.

The 10-week old male and female cubs are the offspring of Abi, aged 10 years and Lucifer, aged six. They are the star attractions at the Zoo this summer. Lion keepers say they are very excited.

Malcolm Fitzpatrick, Lion Keeper at London Zoo, said, "Today's the first time that our two Asian lion cubs have come out into this enclosure with their mother Abi and it's not only fantastic news for us, but also for the International Breeding Programme."

When the cubs reach maturity, they will most likely be placed at another zoo, as part of the International Breeding Programme.

Malcolm Fitzpatrick, Lion Keeper at London Zoo, said, "These two are a vital addition to the International Breeding Programme and they will stay here at London Zoo until they reach maturity, about three years, and then they will begin to move on to other collections around the world and form their own captive breeding groups as well."

Asian lions have smaller manes than African lions, making their ears more visible. They are classified as critically endangered by the "International Union for Conservation of Nature". Until now, Abi was the last Asian lion cub to be born at London Zoo.

Asian lions now only exist in the wild in the Gir Forest in India. Less than 300 live there in the small and overcrowded sanctuary.
