Bio-artificial corneas have been used to restore vision in partially blind patients, offering hope to millions of partially sighted people, AP reported. The biosynthetic cornea is made from laboratory-constructed human collagen. Researchers from the University of Ottawa in Canada and Linkoping University in Sweden removed damaged tissue from 10 Swedish patients' eyes in an early-stage clinical trial and implanted the bio-artificial cornea. Soon, cells that line a healthy cornea grew in the collagen and nerves regenerated themselves. And the corneas were capable of producing tears. It is hoped the technology will provide an answer to the severe shortage of donor transplant corneas. |
