Netherlands-based Royal Philips Electronics NV said it has opened two new state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities in Shanghai to support the liquid crystal display (LCD) and optical storage activities of its components division.
Philips said one plant will produce flat displays for mobile applications, including the telecommunications, smart-handhelds, automotive and avionics markets and will position the company to take advantage of the telecommunications sector's rapid transition to color, which is expected to take place over the next two years.
The other plant, a new optical storage facility which replaces an existing facility, will produce drive mechanisms, loaders and optical pick-up units (OPUs), which are used in CD-R and CD-RW drives.
