The Sixth Major Cities' Summit Beijing 2000 opened in Beijing Thursday.

Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji, and some 150 representatives from more than countries and international organizations presented at the opening ceremony.

The summit meeting is considered an important gathering for mayors of major cities in the world at the turn of the new century. It will focus on a theme of urban development and cooperation among cities in the 21st century.
