World Driver's Permit: US$246

Chinese citizens can now apply for an internationally accepted driver's license in Shanghai rather than having to wait until they're overseas.

Two companies - Shanghai East Best International Business Co. and Beijing-based China International Intellect - began offering the service last week.

The price tag: US$150 plus an 800 yuan (US$96) "service charge."

"By obtaining this kind of driver's license, Chinese who go abroad for further study, business, short-term training or a vacation can drive in the countries they are in," said Wang Liping of Shanghai East Best.

Documents provided by Wang stated that holders of the international license can purchase auto accident insurance coverage - similar to that offered to U.S. drivers.

Designed by the United Nations with eight languages on it, the license is now available in nearly 190 countries, including Iran and the United States, and China's two special administrative regions, Hong Kong and Macau.

"We believe Shanghai is a huge market for the license service we provide," Wang said.

"Since more and more Chinese nowadays have the opportunity to go abroad, they need a convenient means of transportation."

So far, more than 50 Chinese nationals have come to Shanghai East Best to apply for the international driver's license.

Applicants must first have a China driver's license before they can seek the five-year international permit. An identification card and a photograph are also needed. Written or road tests are not required for applicants.

Chinese citizens should also carry their China driver's license, Wang said.

But, Wang added, "The international driver's license is also regarded as a type of identification by foreign authorities."
