Police Seize Drugs Suspects in Beijing

Police seized a large amount of drugs and detained two suspects Friday in Beijing.

The police have confiscated over 500 narcotics pills, 500 gram of "ice drug" and 24,600 yuan cash (US$3,000) from two traffickers.

Sources from local police said that plainclothes detective started to contact the peddlers as a buyer after learning about information of their intention to do the "business."

The "Ice" drug, academically termed deoxidized ephedrine, looks like white crystals and is a highly addictive chemical compound.

In 2000, China cracked 96,000 drug-related criminal cases, up 48.7 percent over the previous year, and confiscated 6.3 tons of heroin, 2.4 tons of opium, 20.9 tons of ice drug, and some 215 tons of chemicals illegally used to make narcotics.

The case is still under investigation, sources said.
