The dream of receiving a high school education and holding a Western diploma may become a reality for students enrolled in Wuai High School next year.
The Education, Training and Youth Department of Manitoba, Canada, signed an agreement with the Shanghai Luwan District Education Bureau last week to launch the program in September 2002.
"Canadian teachers will be assigned to teach in Shanghai and the curriculum will be jointly developed," said Pat Rowantree, assistant deputy minister of Manitoba. "A Canadian diploma will be granted to graduates who meet English-language standards and collect the required number of credits."
Wuai High School is located in Luwan District of Shanghai.
Graduates of the program will have the choice of sitting for China's college entrance exams or applying for admission to Canadian colleges, Rowantree said.
The Luwan District has pledged 10 million yuan (US$1.2 million) to fund the international project and the Hong Kong-based World First Investment Ltd, the investor for the Canadian side, is putting up US$300,000, the two sides said.
