Ancient Capital Spends Heavily on Tourism Projects

The municipal government of Kaifeng, the capital of seven Chinese dynasties in Henan Province, central China, is stepping up efforts to construct five Song dynasty (960-1279) tourism projects.

The first stage of the project involve a total investment of 318 million yuan and is expected to be completed by April next year.

Kaifeng was the capital of the Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127). It was then called Bianliang. The dynasty is well known for Bao Zhen (Bao Gong), a honest and upright official, as well as other well-known historical figures such as Ou Yangxiu, Kou Zhun, Fan Zhongyan and other historical characters.

The five projects include reconstruction of a Kaifeng official residence, a museum featuring ancient city walls and the Guzhou Bridge, built in Tang Dynasty (618-907) and buried by Yellow River's mud and sand during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644).

The local government plans to turn the old city into a modern tourist center in three years.
