Chinese Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan said in Beijing on Wednesday that the Palestinians are entitled to establish their own independent state according to relevant resolutions of the United Nations and agreements reached between Israel and Palestine.
In talks with Israeli Minister of Regional Cooperation Shimon Peres, Tang said that the Chinese government and people are very much concerned about the development of the situation in the Middle East and hope continuous progress will be made in the Middle East peace talks.
China hopes that Israel and Palestine will continue the talks and find a solution that is acceptable to both sides, Tang said.
He stressed that China, as a permanent member of the Security Council of the United Nations, has consistently supported the Middle East peace process and made unremitting efforts in pushing forward the peace talks.
Tang pledged that China will continue to make its due contribution to the further development of the Middle East peace talks.
Sent by Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak, Peres is in Beijing on a special mission to inform the Chinese side of the latest development of the peace talks between Israel and Palestine.
Prior to his talks with Tang, Peres had a meeting with Zeng Peiyan, minister in charge of China's State Development Planning Commission.
