A Uygur man and his son saved eleven people during the July 5th riot in Urumqi. In doing so, they put their own lives at risk.

42-year-old Amat is a security guard at this market that saw violence on the night of July the fifth. He was on night shift that day. He says the first person he saved was a woman with a severe head injury. She stumbled towards Amat, cried for help and collapsed.

Amat, market security guard, Urumqi, said, "I quickly pulled her into my office while two rioters who had attacked her were smashing the windows of a police car. It was a life-and death moment. But I had to do it. Otherwise they would have come back to hurt her again."

Amat's 20-year-old son Ahat has a similar story. He's a security guard at a nearby kindergarten. That night, a pregnant woman was caught in the violence.
