Chinese athletes are racking-up more golden memories in Belgrade. China remains atop the medal table, with a haul of 13 gold, 16 silver and 10 bronze.The latest addition to the gold count came courtesy of diver Dong Jun, who won the women's 3m springboard title on Wednesday.

A tropical thunderstorm delayed the final for about an hour and caused a breakdown of the sound system. But the 18-year-old Dong was undeterred, collecting 333.65 points to claim the gold. Mexican Laura Sanchez finished second, with her compatriot Paola Espinosa clinching the bronze.

Universiade is an university athletics sporting gala. It's an international sporting and cultural festival staged every two years.

The event were first organised in 1924 and was first officially entitled Universiade in Turin, Italy in 1959.

Today, many view the Universiade as second in importance, only behind the Olympic Games.

China first took part in the Universiade early in 1959 and successfully hosted the event in 2001. Most Chinese sports stars took their first steps toward the world stage at the Universiade, including Los Angeles gymnastic champion Li Ning and basketball giant Yao Ming. Diving queen Guo Jingjing even took part in three consecutive Universiades beginning in 2003.

For young Chinese athletes, participating in a Universiade has become an effective way to learn from rivals, test their skills against the best in their age group and communicate with the world.
