Greece has formally inaugurated its long-awaited Acropolis Museum. In Saturday's opening ceremony, the Greek Culture Minister said the Parthenon marbles in London must return to Greece.
He recalled that the Parthenon and its marbles were victims of looting and urged for the crime to be corrected. He said the museum has an ethical power that calls the marbles back for reunion.
The museum president highlighted all the missing pieces and fragmented sculptures with parts now located in Britain. Greece has been campaigning to bring back the marbles in the British Museum since the 1980's. The British Museum refuses to return the pieces, saying Greece didn't have a proper place to store them.
Greece now claims the new museum dismisses that argument, and has called for support from the international community.
