Hosting a troubled Flamengo soccer team in the 4th round of the Brazilian Championship, Fluminense won by the score of 2-1 on Wednesday.
It marks an important win for Fluminense's head coach Muricy Ramalho who won his first big cross-town rivalry match-up.
The game was the last of the rivalries that will be hosted at the Maracana stadium. The facility will be closed in order to begin the necessary reforms in order to host matches in the 2014 World Cup.
The match also marked Fred's return to Fluminense after missing more than two weeks due to appendicitis.
Rodriguinho scored Fluminense's first goal in the 10th minute, followed by Dario Conca in the 55th minute.
Flamengo goalkeeper Bruno scored his team's only goal off a stopped ball in the 90th minute.
Fluminense's victory put an end to a 9-game winless streak against Flamengo. The win takes Fluminense to 6 points while Flamengo remains with 5 points.
In the next round of play, Flamengo will host Gremio on May 29 while Fluminense will travel to play Atletico-MG on May 30.
