Without Fred, Fluminense'sAndre Lima rose to the occasion against Volta Redonda on Sunday inthe sixth round of the second half of play in the Rio de Janeiro state championship. Lima's two goals led Fluminense to a 2-1 win.
Andre Lima scored his first goal in the 36th minute. Mariano crossed the ball from the right side of the field when Lima cut through the defense and headed the ball into the goal. The strikerscored again in the 44th minute. Off a corner kick, Lima took advantage of a loose ball and rolled it into the back of the VoltaRedonda net.
Volta Rendonda's Tiago Bastos scored his team's only goal in the 69th minute. Taking a chance from long range, Bastos fired a ball that slipped through the grasp of Fluminense's goalie, Rafael,and into the net.
With their win, Fluminense earned their 13th point of the second half of the state tournament. They are tied with Flamengo in first place of Group A. However, Flamengo holds the advantage due to goals scored.
Both teams return to action in the state championship on March 24. Fluminense will travel to play Madureira while Volta Redonda will travel to face Duque de Caxias.
