In the 21st minute, Mariano rolled off a pass to a wide-open Fred who then angled the ball past Fabio and into the goal.
After some minor adjustments to their formation, Portuguesa returned to the field in the second half with a stronger offensive attack, and scored its first goal in the 73rd minute.
Luiz Carlos fired a ball from long distance that deflected off Cassio and rolled to Luiz Ricardo who blasted it into the Fluminense goal.
In the 80th minute, Paulo Sergio sent a stopped ball over the defensive wall and into the goal, scoring his team's second and last goal of the night.
Due to Fluminense's lack of concentration in the second half, the team was booed after the game by their fans. Nevertheless, the team advanced to face Gremio in the quarterfinals with the first match of the series being held on April 28 at the Maracana stadium.
