| The UK's National Health Service spends ￡40 million a year treating injuries caused by wearing flip-flops, the Daily Mail reported. More than 200,000 people visit their local doctor or end up in hospital every year after suffering falls or developing long-term problems. Experts say flip-flops force people to change the way they walk so that when taking a stride they put pressure on the outside of their foot, rather than the heel, causing long-term damage. There is also the risk of serious injury from tripping over. The most frequent complaints are twisted ankles, but some people break their arms or wrists after falling when their flip-flops snag on uneven ground. Others also suffer aching toes as they constantly scrunch them up to grip the thong, and there is also the danger of the odd stubbed toe. |

| Ivy Bean, the oldest person on Twitter, died at the age of 104 on July 28, the Guardian reported. Bean retired from her job as a mill worker when she was 73. She joined Facebook at age of 102 while living in a care home on the outskirts of Bradford, and quickly graduated to Twitter. She amassed over 56,000 followers with posts describing her daily life including meals, family visits, and an invitation from former Prime Minister Gordon Brown to visit him in Downing Street. She even struck up an unlikely friendship with pop star Peter Andre. Care home manager Pat Wright said that Bean was "very open" to new ideas and was always willing to have a go at something. |

Following the death of the former record-holder He Pingping in March, Huang stepped forward in hopes of claiming the title of the world's smallest man, the Daily Mail reported. Huang, or "Short Brother" as he is known locally, is only 1.4cm taller than He. The 40 year old weighs just 12kg, about as much as a three-year-old. |
