The Beijing municipal government has decided to build its first garbage incineration power station in Chaoyang District in the eastern part of Beijing.
Approved by the State Development Planning Commission, construction of the project is expected to start soon with 680 million yuan (US$82 million) of investment.
The garbage power station is expected to incinerate over 1,300 tons of garbage daily and its annual power generating capacity could reach 136 million kwh.
The power station, expected to begin operation in the year 2002, could incinerate 16 percent of the city’s total daily garbage each day.
Beijing’s daily garbage volume stands at 8,000 tons and the city has built nine large environment friendly garbage disposal projects in the past few years and 80 percent of the daily garbage will be sent to those plants by the end of this year.
Beijing plans to build four garbage recycling plants in the outskirts of the city in 2002 and by the year of 2005, all the garbage in the city is expected to be disposed of harmlessly.
Latest remote sensing images offered by Beijing Environmental Health Research Institute indicate that Beijing city had witnessed a reduced number of garbage piles, with the number of such piles each covering over 36 square meters reduced from over 2,800 in 1987 to nearly 600 in Beijing’s suburban areas, due to the improved management of garbage.
