Explosion Survivors Resume Schooling

On the photo, Song Xiaohong, a pupil slightly injured at the Jiangxi primary school explosion, studies at another local school March 12, 2001 in Wanzai county, Jiangxi province.

Daily schooling of the 250 pupils was restored in other nearby schools after the explosion occurred March 6, killing 41 and injuring 27.

“I didn’t expect my son could go back to school so soon after the terrible explosion,” said Lan Meixiu, mother of fourth-grader Wen Lisheng.

After consulting the parents of the survivors, the educational department of the local government arranged for the children to continue their education at 13 nearby primary schools.

Relevant departments have sent textbooks, desks and other school facilities to the lucky pupils.

Local governments will spend some 600,000 yuan (US$72,500) to construct a new school building for the devastated Fanglin Primary School. Meanwhile, donations from all walks of life have amounted to US$31,000.
