China will send 12 working groups to grassroots levels to check on progress made in the crackdown on crime and the implementation of comprehensive measures to maintain public order. Thirteen provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions will be inspected.
The move was announced Tuesday at a meeting of the Central Committee of Political and Legal Affairs of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the Central Committee for Comprehensive Management of Public Security.
“The crackdown on crime and the comprehensive management of public security should be furthered,” said Luo Gan, a member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of CPC and head of the two committees.
At a national working conference on public security held in early April, President Jiang Zemin and Premier Zhu Rongji set out clear requirement on maintaining social order.
Since then, Luo said, the crackdown on serious criminal acts has achieved an initial victory although in many places the achievements are not so satisfying.
The working groups are expected to further the crackdown on crime. Luo urged the inspection to look at specific problems such as how criminal gangs are dealt with, what kind of punishment they receive, the difficulty of cracking down on criminal groups and their “protective umbrella”- Party and government officials who act in collusion with them and offer protection to them.
