Photographic art has improved a lot in China, foreign experts agreed Tuesday in Shanghai. The Fifth International Photography Exhibition, which is to take place here in October, has aroused the interests of photographers worldwide.
Michele McNally of the United States, an expert invited to appraise the pictures for the event, said she was impressed by Chinese photographers' work.
"China has many good photographers who can win prizes in any exhibitions in the world." said McNally, a photography editor at the US magazine Fortune. "Many of their pictures are inspiring," she added.
The organizing committee has received 8,800 pieces of works, but selected only 280 of them for exhibition. Twenty-four pictures were awarded prizes.
Chinese photographer Wang Guonian won one of the two first prizes. The other was awarded to a Thai national.
Meanwhile, Chinese have won all the eight second prizes, and 11of 14 third prizes.
A Singaporean member of a commission for appraisal of the photographs said that he thought some of the pictures were masterpiece.
A Japanese critic said that Chinese photographers were using their true feelings to take pictures. That's why many pictures look touching, he added.
The critics are from China, the United States, the Netherlands, Russia, Japan and Singapore.
The Shanghai International Photography Exhibition was first held in 1986, and since then has been held once every two years, the sponsors said.
