Russian Ballet to Dance Classics

After so many versions of "Swan Lake," Shanghai Grand Theatre will hold a "Tchaikovsky Music Festival" from June 15 to June 24.

The Novosibirsk State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre will give performances of the maestro's three ballet masterpieces, "Swan Lake," "Sleeping Beauty" and "Nutcracker" and his opera, "Queen of Spades."

Founded in May 1945, the Novosibirsk State Academic Opera is among the top opera troupes in Russia.

The troupe visited China for the first time in 1957. Last August, they came to Shanghai in celebration of the second anniversary of Shanghai Grand Theatre. Their presentation of "Swan Lake" and "Arabian Nights" won them critical acclaim across the city.

This will be the premier of "Queen of Spades" in Shanghai.

In conjunction with this program, Vardan Mamikonian, a Russian pianist, will play Tchaikovsky's "Piano Concerto No. 1 in B flat minor" in recital. The programs will be performed to the accompaniment of the Shanghai Broadcasting Symphony Orchestra.
