Shanghai will have more than 20 major transportation projects under construction this year, construction officials said yesterday.
The package includes tunnels, elevated highways and highways.
Two cross-river tunnels on Dalian and Fuxin roads in central downtown will start construction before the year-end. Both will be finished by 2004.
A 18.5-kilometer section of the Outer-Ring Road in northwest Shanghai will be finished in October.
Several main downtown roads will be rebuilt or expanded this year including the Longwu, Hutai and Wenshui roads.
Projects already started include a cross-river tunnel near Wusong Park which will be completed by 2002.
Lupu Bridge, the sixth bridge over Huangpu River, is scheduled for 2003.
The 7-kilometer Gonghexin Road Elevate Highway, which constructed to be a two level way consisting both roadways and subways extending from the Railway Station in central downtown to Baoshan District in north Shanghai, will be initially finished in 2002.
A 650-kilometer express way network connecting Shanghai and the nearby provinces will be finished by 2005. The downtown section of the main Huqingping Highway will be finshed in this April and the second phase of the 10-kilometer Jialiu highway will be completed by year-end.
