China in Bid to Thwart Organized Crime

China is launching a nationwide campaign against organized crime syndicates and a senior official called for mounted and coordinated efforts to ensure its success.

Speaking at a tele-conference in Beijing Monday, Luo Gan, a member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and a state councilor, said that the campaign is aimed at safeguarding political and social stability.

The state councilor said that a large number of crime syndicates have been dismantled by the police during the past years. However, in some places criminal bands run so rampant that local people dare not call the police to have their injustices redressed.

Luo, who is also secretary of the Central Political Science and Law Committee, stressed that organized crime syndicates will not be allowed to harm the people or jeopardize society in a socialist country like China under the CPC leadership.

He called on CPC committees and governments at all level to give forceful support to the "hit-hard" campaign.
