In early 1990s, Panda detergent earned a house-hold name among millions of families in China.
Its producer, Beijing No 2 Consumer Products Plant was proud to be one of the country's national consumer product-makers, famous for their high-quality.
But in 1994, people discovered that Panda detergent was made by Proctor&Gamble's Beijing company after the name was purchased by the world's consumer product giant at a price of over US$10 million.
Six years later, the joint venture agreement ceased, and P&G has conducted its Beijing business on its own.
Panda's former maker is now ready to produce a new kind of detergent under the old name. But analysts say it's still too early to tell whether Panda will regain its reputation in the fiercely competitive domestic detergent market.
