China to Become Int'l Power T&D Equipment Manufacturing Center

Experts attending the third Beijing International Conference on Power Transmission and Distribution (T&D) Technology say on Tuesday that China will become the world center for T&D equipment.

China's campaign for urban and rural power grid construction and refurbishment launched in 1998, has created a huge market for power T&D, said Philippe Joubert, president of Alstom T&D Sector.

The campaign aims to supply huge loads of power with high quality and reliability.

In recent years, China has kept a strong momentum in the development of power industry. Last year, the holding companies of State Power generated 677 billion KW/h, up 8.5 percent on the previous year.

China also achieved success in building power projects such as the Three Gorges on the Yangtze river and "sending the electricity from west to east". To date investment in urban and rural power grid construction and refurbishment has reached 177.4 billion yuan and US$338m of foreign investment has been used in developing the power sector.

Experts point out, China's entry into the World Trade Organization has provided more scope for T&D products to be exported to more countries.
