China recently developed its first high-brightness light-emitting diode (LED), breaking the technological monopoly held by a small number of developed countries, Xinhua News Agency reported.
Made by a group of scientists headed by Li Yuzhang, a researcher from the Institute of Semiconductors under the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the breakthrough is a part of the country’s hi-tech development plan - Program 863.
The diode is capable of emitting extremely bright red, orange and yellow light. The product is just as good as the best in the world, said Li.
The special technique, according to Li, also executive vice director of the National Engineering Research Center for Optoelectronics Devices, is called “metal organic chemical vapor deposition.”
Light-emitting diode, widely used to display panels for electronic advertisement boards, stock market boards, and indicators of vehicles and medical instruments, is more effective than incandescent lamps because of its higher energy efficiency and a longer lifespan of more than 10 years.
Li said the market potential for the technology will be huge both in and outside China.
With imported parts, more than 100 plants in China are assembling 15 billion units of LED this year, while the demand for the diode in the world market exceeds 100 billion units.
According to Li, the institute is planning to commercialize the technology by manufacturing LED units.
