A series of activities will be held to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the promulgation and implementation of China's Law on Protection of the Disabled, the first of its kind in the country, sources told a news conference Thursday.
Deng Pufang, head of China Disabled Persons' Federation and China Welfare Fund for the Handicapped, said at the news conference that the disabled protection law marked the nation's efforts to put welfare issues for the handicapped under legal supervision.
"Historical and economical limitations are still tampering with protection of the legal rights of the country's handicapped citizens. Discrimination against the disabled and violation of their legitimate rights still remains a problem yet to be solved," Deng said.
Deng also called for greater efforts in establishing a complete system to provide legal guidance and assistance to the handicapped group.
Activities including seminars, exhibitions and cultural galas, will be organized by 12 ministries and institutions to celebrate the adoption of the law.
The Law of the People's Republic of China on the Protection of the Disabled was promulgated on December 28, 1990 and took effect on May 15, 1991.
