Lee Kuan Yew Visits Shanghai

Lee Kuan Yew, senior minister in the Prime Minister's Office of Singapore, visited this east China metropolis Saturday, and met with Shanghai Mayor Xu Kuangdi in the evening.

Xu said that Shanghai is building itself into an international economic, financial, trade and navigation center, and the city is keen to strengthen economic cooperation with Singapore.

Lee praised the development of Shanghai, and said Singapore attaches importance to the exchanges and cooperation with Shanghai and China at large.

By April, trade between Shanghai and Singapore had reached US$2.8 billion, mainly in the sectors of machinery, electronic appliances and minerals.

Lee arrived in Shanghai June 7, and went directly to Suzhou. On Saturday afternoon, he returned to Shanghai for a visit after concluding his stay in to Suzhou.

On Saturday, Lee also visited the metropolis' Pudong New District.
