Killian Named Honorary Citizen of Beijing

George E. Killian, president of the International University Sports Federation (FISU), has been honored on Saturday for his work on behalf of China. Killian became the 18th individual to receive the Certificate of Honorary Citizen of Beijing.

Killian, who is in Beijing for the 21st Universiade which opens Wednesday, was given the honor by Mayor Liu Qi for his friendly sentiment to the Chinese people, his efforts to bring the Universiade to Beijing and for supporting the capital city's successful 2008 Olympics bid.

After receiving the award, a clearly moved FISU President opted not to read his prepared speech but instead addressed the mayor, the FISU organizing committee and the citizens of Beijing with words that came from his heart.

"Mr. Mayor, I will cherish this honor. I don't know how to put it! I am very proud! I am really touched by your generosity. If there is anything I can do for you, you can count on me. Thank you again."
