China Protests US Arms Sales to Taiwan

The Chinese side urges the United States to earnestly follow the three Sino-US joint communiqués and the relevant commitments, and abandon the planned arms sales to Taiwan, said Friday Sun Yuxi, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman.

"Otherwise, the US side should bear the serious consequences arising therefrom," he added.

It has been reported that the US defense department informed the congress that it will sell Taiwan weapons worth US$ 1.3 billion , which include supersonic medium-ranged space-to-space missiles.

Commenting on the report, Sun said that the United States, regardless of China's solemn representation, will flagrantly sell a large number of advanced weapons to Taiwan, adding that the Chinese Foreign Ministry has lodged a strong protest to the US government.

Sun emphasized that the actions of the US have seriously violated the principles of the three Sino-US joint communiques, especially that of the "August 17" Joint Communique, infringing China's sovereignty and interfering in China's internal affairs.
