Shanghai Boasts World Largest Cable Network

Shanghai's cable television network has become world largest so far, which covers 99 per cent of the city with 3.1 million terminal households, said an official of the Shanghai Municipal Economic Commission.

The cable network construction, one of the key hi-tech projects in Shanghai has caught much attention from the municipal government.

Huang Qifan, director of the Shanghai Municipal Economic Commission, said the city will integrate telephone network, Internet network and cable network into one mainstream network at the end of this year, in a bid to boost accession speed.

In another development, the two-way broad band transmission project of the cable network, which debuted last year, will enable subscribers to surf the Internet, use video-on-demand and IP phone services via cable network after completion.

Since established seven years ago, Shanghai cable network has attracted 3.1 billion subscribers, compared with 70,000 subscribers in 1992.
