High School Classes Begin for Xinjiang Students

A total of 1,000 students from northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region began their high school term in 12 cities recently.

These four-year senior classes mainly enroll farmers’ children from Xinjiang ethnic groups, who may be able to attend universities or colleges if they perform well in the national college entrance exam.

Key schools in Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, Nanjing, Guangzhou, Hangzhou, Shenzhen, Dalian, Qingdao, Ningbo, Suzhou and Wuxi will accept these students.

To prompt the development of the west, the central government has allocated a large sum of money to foster Xinjiang talent.

The local governments of the above 12 cities will undertake the cost of running the schools while the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region will cover the living-cost, tuition and medical fees of needy students.
