Tourism Regulations under Way

City government is speeding up the drafting of local tourism regulations that are expected to be submitted to the local legislature for consideration next year.

"Compared with other cities, Shanghai is lagging behind in terms of tourism regulations," Yao Mingbao, director of the Shanghai Tourism Administrative Commission, told the Standing Committee of the Shanghai People's Congress yesterday.

The regulations being drafted by the commission mainly concern the administration of tourism spots, sightseeing routes, hotels and guides.

The draft regulations may be amended by the legislature, which has the final say.

Since the end of February, 22 provinces and municipalities, including Beijing, had put their tourism administration regulations into effect.

At its annual conference, the Standing Committee will also receive a report from the Shanghai Municipal Construction and Management Commission.

The conference began yesterday and ends Friday.

The legislature will vote on several drafts at the meeting, including those governing corpse donation and land use.
