First Tibetan Air Stewardesses

The first group of 15 Tibetan stewardesses will start work on passenger aircraft for the Chengdu-Lhasa air route on the first day of the new millennium.

These Tibetans were employed by China Southwest Airlines. It is the first time that a domestic carrier has recruited stewardesses from the ethnic Tibetan group, according to an official from the airline.

The stewardesses are selected from 400 local Tibetan candidates who competed in a series of health examinations as well as colloquial English and Tibetan languages in the capital of southwest China’s Tibet Autonomous Region,

The 15 winners received diversified professional training programs on airline service and skills from September to December, the official said.

“The beautiful Tibetan girls will put on colorful Tibetan ethnic dress on the airplane to offer good service to the passengers,” he added.
