CD Makers Pledge to Protect Copyright

Compact disc manufacturers in China are to tackle China's piracy problem. Bosses of 70 enterprises, who were attending a training course organised by the State Press and Publications Administration and the National Copyright Administration, agreed on the need to protect CD copyright.

They also pledged to check unauthorised electronic products and infringement of intellectual property rights. This is the first such pledge made by Chinese compact disc manufacturers.

But Guangzhou-based White Swan and Shenzhen-based Advanced Science and Technology Laser Video, two leading producers of audio and visual products in China, declined to comment further on the pledge.

Illegal copying and distribution of VCDs, software and electronic products are a problem because piracy means artists and software developers are not paid full royalties. This problem has tarnished the image of a country that is expecting to join the World Trade Organisation next year.
