Bishop Shocked at CNN's Ignorance

Chinese Bishop Michael Fu Tieshan said in New York Tuesday that he is shocked to hear an anchorman on US Cable News Network (CNN) alleging "China has occupied Tibet for 40 years."

Fu, chairman of the Chinese Catholic Patriotic Association, who heads the Chinese delegation of religious leaders to the United Nations, made the remark in an interview broadcast live by CNN, which also conducted a live interview with the Dalai Lama a day earlier.

A CNN news anchorman said in the interview Monday that China has occupied Tibet for 40 years.

Fu told CNN that Tibet has been included in the Chinese territorial map since the 13th century, and has thus been an inalienable part of the country.

"I wish such simple mistakes by CNN could be avoided," he said.

Responding to the Dalai Lama's recent remarks on the ongoing Millennium World Peace Summit, Bishop Fu said that the Dalai Lama is merely paying lip service by speaking nice words such as peace, harmony, compromise and non-violence. "In fact, he has been creating conflicts and stirring up confrontations and hatred," the bishop said.
