In answer to the growing number of teenage pregnancies and other sex-related problems stemming from China’s increasingly open society, 22 universities and polytechnic schools in Yuelu District of Changsha, central China’s Hunan Province, will open sex education courses next semester.
There are now nearly 100,000 young people studying in universities and polytechnic schools in the district.
As Chinese society becomes more open, many problems have arisen among the students, who are living together, getting pregnant and giving birth out of wedlock, Monday’s China Youth Daily reported.
Statistics from a local hospital indicated that the youngest student to undergo an abortion was about 16 years old. Around 80 percent of the girls who have had abortions at hospitals were unmarried and between the ages of 16 and 26.
A survey conducted among 2,000 students in the district revealed that many do not get sufficient information about sex from their parents and schools, and 90 percent of the interviewed believed that education on sex and propagation was necessary.
