With the harnessing and reconstructing efforts of Beijing municipal government the former Lotus Park, lying by the Beijing West Railway Station has resumed its beautiful scenery of green water and blooming lotus flowers as it used to be in the past.
From 1980's, the water of the Lotus Pond was deteriorated by industrial pollution. In the 1990's, the industrial sewage from the upper reaches was conducted into drains and the lake was cut off from its water-source.
The dried-up Lotus Pond gradually turned into a large cesspit full of trash. In May 1998, Beijing municipal government passed the "Program for the Reconstruction of the Lotus Pond". After two years of efforts, the Lotus Pond covering an area of 446,000 square meters takes on a new look again.
