High-tech Products Dominate Beijing's Export

High-tech products have taken up a lion's share of Beijing's export in the first five months of 2001.

According to Beijing Customs, the export of high-tech products had reached US$916 million by May, accounting for half of the city's total and representing a year-on-year increase of 78.8 percent, 32 percentage points higher than the national average.

Computers and telecommunication facilities, realizing an export volume of US$754 million and a year-on-year growth of 200 percent, stand out prominently by acquiring some 80 percent of the high-tech's export share.

Meanwhile, life-science products and bio-science products, with exports of over US$35 million and US$1.33 million respectively, also reported high growth rates.

According to customs, Beijing's export products went to over 100 countries and regions throughout the world with Hong Kong, Japan, Europe and the US as the major recipients.

With the economic recovery in Asia, Beijing's high-tech products export to the southeast Asian region has increased to a large extent. Export to the Republic of Korea, for instance, went up by 136 percent over the same period of 2000.
