So far, APEC has
21 members whose population contributes 45 percent of the world's
total. Its GDP and trade volume account for 55 percent and 46
percent of the world's total.
In 1999, China obtained US$270.97 billion in trade volume with
20 APEC members, 75.1 percent of the country's total and an
increase of 11.1 percent over the previous year. The foreign
investment introduced during the year had a contracted value
of US$41.238 billion, of which US$40.398 billion were actually
utilized. The nine Asian APEC members saw a drop in their investment
in China. The United States invested a total of US$4.387 billion
in China, 12.14 percent up over the previous year.
