Seven-day public holidays would be observed around the opening and closing ceremonies for the Shenzhen Universiade in August, the city public security bureau confirmed Tuesday.
The holidays will be Aug. 11-14 and Aug. 22-24. The Shenzhen Universiade will be held Aug. 12-23.
From Aug. 4 to 24, traffic police will begin imposing traffic restrictions, using the odd-and-even number system to control the flow of vehicles on alternate days.
The traffic restrictions will be imposed from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. in the business districts of Longgang and Bao'an, Shuiguan, Qingping and Yanba expressways and Bao'an Boulevard. The ban will extend to midnight during the opening and closing dates of the Universiade.
The restrictions will keep about 800,000 vehicles off the road during the busiest moments of the Games.
Yellow-labeled vehicles are also banned in July and drivers caught entering restricted areas will be subjected to emissions tests. If they fail they will be fined 300 yuan (US$45).
Government vehicles are also restricted and the public is asked to take public transport to help relieve traffic congestion and improve air quality.
