A total of 100 torchbearers continued the Universiade torch relay through Guangzhou University Town, the third leg of the Games torch relay.

There were more torchbearers than in each of the two previous relays at Beijing and Shenzhen universities, more than half of whom were college students from around the country.

Each torchbearer ran 80 meters passing the main buildings of Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, Guangdong University of Chinese Medicine and Zhongshan University.

“I was honored to be a torchbearer for the Universiade, which was different from being a torchbearer for the Asian Games last year because the Universiade is for youth,” said Zhou Jiawei, the No. 1 torchbearer.

Zhou won two gold medals for the butterfly stroke at the Asian Games last year and is recognized as the “king of the butterfly stroke in Asia.”

An Olympic diving champion, Hu Jia, the No. 2 torchbearer, said after the relay that he had achieved his “grand slam” by being a torchbearer at major international sports events by taking part in the Universiade torch relay.
