Ministry of Health Press Release (June 1) on SARS

The Press Office under the Ministry of Health published Sunday afternoon a press release on the latest SARS situation on the Chinese mainland. On June 1, 3 provinces reported new SARS cases, of which, 1 province reported both new diagnosed cases and new suspected cases, 1 province reported new diagnosed cases, 1 province reported new suspected cases, and the remaining 28 provinces reported no new case.

From 10:00 am May 31 to 10:00 am June 1, China reported 2 new cases, 62 patients recovered. The 2 diagnosed cases used to be suspected but now are confirmed as SARS patients.

Beijing reported 1 new diagnosed case (who used to be suspected but now confirmed as a SARS patient) and 37 patients recovered.

Hebei reported 1 new diagnosed case (who used to be suspected but now confirmed as a SARS patient) and 3 patients recovered.

The remaining provinces reported no new diagnosed case or death.

Patients who had recovered and been discharged from hospital included 9 from Inner Mongolia, 7 from Tianjin, 3 from Shanxi, 1 each from Shanghai, Henan and Guangdong.

From 10:00 am May 31 to 10:00 am June 1, China also reported 7 new suspected cases, including 4 from Beijing and 3 from Guangdong.

From 10:00 am May 31 to 10:00 am June 1, China also reported 27 misdiagnosed suspected cases, of which 11 were from Beijing, 6 from Guangdong, 4 from Hebei, 2 each from Shanxi and Inner Mongolia, 1 each from Hubei and Hunan. By 10:00 am June 1, China had a total of 982 suspected cases.

From 10:00 am May 13 to 10:00 am June 1, 12 provinces reported a total of 450 SARS cases, which included 302 from Beijing, 56 from Hebei, 36 from Shanxi, 15 from Tianjin, 15 from Inner Mongolia, 8 from Guangdong, 6 from Jilin, 5 from Sichuan, 3 from Liaoning, 2 from Guangxi, 1 each from Shanghai and Hubei. Now 1,565 patients are receiving treatment in hospitals.

According to the related standards of the WHO and local SARS case report, Heilongjiang and Xinjiang still reported no diagnosed case. Gansu, Jiangsu, Anhui, Shaanxi, Zhejiang, Henan, Chongqing, Jiangxi, Ningxia, Shandong, Fujian and Hunan had reported no new diagnosed case for 20 days. Among them, local SARS spreading didn't occur in 9 provinces, mild local spreading occurred in 3 other provinces but the spreading chain had been cut off.

By 10:00 am June 1, 12 provinces had reported SARS cases. Tianjin, Jilin, Guangdong, Guangxi and Hubei had reported no new diagnosed case for 10 days; Shanghai and Sichuan had reported no new diagnosed case for 9 days; Liaoning had reported no new diagnosed case for 8 days; and Shanxi and Inner Mongolia had reported no new diagnosed case for 6 days.
