Ministry of Health Press Release (May 26) on SARS

The Press Office under the Ministry of Health published Monday afternoon a press release on the latest SARS situation on the Chinese mainland. On May 26, 6 provinces reported new SARS cases, of which, 2 provinces reported both new diagnosed cases and new suspected cases, 1 province reported new diagnosed cases, 3 provinces reported new suspected cases, and the remaining 25 provinces reported no new case.

By 10:00 am May 26, 26 provinces had reported SARS cases. So far, Hainan, Guizhou, Yunnan, Qinghai provinces, and Tibet Autonomous Region have not found any case. Of the provinces having reported suspected or diagnosed SARS cases, Heilongjiang and Xinjiang still reported no diagnosed case; Anhui, Shanghai, Gansu, Jiangsu, Hubei, Liaoning and Hunan reported less than 10 diagnosed cases respectively; Ningxia, Zhejiang, Fujian, Chongqing, Jiangxi and Shandong reported less than 5 diagnosed cases respectively. Hunan, Fujian and Shandong had reported no new case for more than 1 month; Ningxia and Jiangxi had reported no new case for 20 days; Henan, Chongqing, Zhejiang, Shaanxi, Anhui, Jiangsu and Gansu had reported no new case for 10 days respectively; Tianjin, Jilin and Guangdong had reported no new case for 9 days; Guangxi had reported no new case for 8 days, and Hubei had reported no new case for 7 days.

From 10:00 am May 25 to 10:00 am May 26, China reported 8 new cases, 87 patients recovered and 2 deaths. Of the 8 cases, 7 used to be suspected but now are confirmed as SARS patients.

Of these figures:

Beijing reported 5 new cases (of which 4 used to be suspected but now confirmed as SARS patients), 43 patients recovered and 1 death
Shanxi reported 1 new case (which used to be suspected but now confirmed as a SARS patient), and 5 patients recovered
Inner Mongolia reported 2 new cases (both of which used to be suspected but now confirmed as SARS patients), 17 patients recovered and 1 death
Tianjin reported no new case, and 4 recovered
Hebei reported no new case, and 13 recovered
Jilin reported no new case, and 3 recovered
Zhejiang and Guangdong reported no new case, with each province reporting 1 patient recovered

By 10:00 am May 26, China had a total of 5,316 SARS cases (965 medical workers; Hebei reported 5 misdiagnosed cases including 1 medical worker. Besides, Hebei removed 1 diagnosed case from the list that had been reported by other province. Inner Mongolia reported 2 misdiagnosed cases.), which included 2,829 patients who had recovered and been discharged from hospital and 317 deaths. Now 2,170 patients are receiving treatment in hospitals.

From 10:00 am May 25 to 10:00 am May 26, China also reported 29 new suspected cases, including 20 from Beijing, 2 from Shanxi, 1 each from Hebei and Henan, and 5 from Guangdong.

From 10:00 am May 25 to 10:00 am May 26, China also reported 85 misdiagnosed suspected cases, of which 52 were from Beijing, 8 from Inner Mongolia, 7 each from Hebei and Guangdong, 4 from Shanxi, 3 from Hubei and 1 each from Shanghai, Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Shaanxi. By 10:00 am May 26, China had a total of 1,510 suspected cases.
