Egypt's ex-president Hosni Mubarak was in a coma and depended on a respirator, a hospital source told Xinhua late Tuesday night, denying earlier reports that he was "clinically died".

The source said that Mubarak is now in intensive care unit.

Xinhua reported that some policemen in plain clothes were stationing near the hospital, allowing no entrance. Currently no official report from the hospital authorities on Mubarak's situation is avaiable.

Egypt's official MENA news agency had earlier quoted medical sources as saying that "Mubarak's heart stopped beating and he was defibrillated many times but he had not responded."

"Mubarak clinically died upon arrival at Maadi Military Hospital where he was moved from Tora Prison Hospital," according to the earlier MENA report.

Following a stroke, Mubarak was moved to the military hospital aboard an ambulance from prison.

Mubarak's heart had stopped beating from some time in Tora Prison in southern the Egyptian capital, and he was treated by electric shock, a prison source said.

84-year-old Mubarak was removed in last year's uprising, and jailed for life earlier this month for his role in the death of protesters before his removal.

He has suffered shortness of breath and severe depression since he was moved to the prison to serve his life term.

The Egyptian people have confronting feelings towards Mubarak, who was ousted last February.

Dozens of supporters showed up at the gate of the hospital, some were holding Mubarak's photo while others praying for him.

"He is a hero of Egypt. He deserves our respect," said a middle-aged woman. But she was sharply interrupted by a young man who called her a liar.

"He should be hanged, Mubarak betrayed his people," the man shouted.
