China on Friday welcomed the announcement that Sudan and South Sudan will resume talks in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, next week.
"We welcome the positive attitudes of both sides in resuming negotiations," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said at a press conference.
China hopes that the two sides will properly resolve pending issues through negotiations and in accordance with African Union (AU) guidelines and relevant resolutions adopted by the UN Security Council (UNSC), he said.
Tensions have increased over recent weeks after South Sudanese forces moved into the oil-producing region of Heglig in Sudan's South Kordofan state, and Sudanese forces bombed South Sudanese territory.
The AU Peace and Security Council on April 24 issued a resolution asking the UNSC to support its demands for Sudan and South Sudan to cease fire within 48 hours, resume negotiations within two weeks and complete the peace agreement in three months.
On May 2, the UNSC adopted a resolution demanding that both sides immediately cease fire and unconditionally withdraw all of their armed forces to their respective sides of the border.
